Highlights of the EOSC and EHDS joint workshop on secure processing of health data

On 4 February 2025, EOSC-ENTRUST held an online workshop with the European Health Data Space (EHDS) to discuss secure processing of health data. The workshop also addressed how the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and EHDS can collaborate to achieve interoperability in Trusted Research Environments (TREs)/Secure Processing Environments (SPEs).

The workshop started with a welcome from ELIXIR Director Tim Hubbard and presentations from the EOSC-Association Health Data Task Force, the European Commission DG SANTE and EOSC-ENTRUST, followed by a panel discussion on 'How to ensure interoperability of European TREs / SPEs'. Key takeaway messages included:

  • Sensitive datasets are fragmented, governed by varying structures and classified differently across Europe. Ensuring data access and interoperability is important for TRE providers.
  • The data access, security and interoperability topics are addressed by EOSC, EHDS and the EOSC-ENTRUST project. There is a need to continue to synchronise the efforts.
  • The use of AI in TRE infrastructures is a complicated challenge. Effort should be put into examining the regulations regularly to align with fast-moving technologies.

During the workshop, participants had the chance to address synergies and ensure knowledge sharing and alignment. The EOSC and EHDS initiatives will continue to work collaboratively to ensure the interoperability of TREs and SPEs and make secure data federation work across Europe.
