EOSC-ENTRUST Policy Brief: The importance of Trusted Research Environments

The EOSC-ENTRUST project has published its first policy brief highlighting the importance of European investment in Trusted Research Environments (TREs).

The policy brief identifies five recommendations for policymakers:

  1. Invest in TRE infrastructure, including hardware, cloud computing, storage, backup systems, software solutions and service staff to enhance national TREs’ security, data storage and analytics capabilities.
  2. Promote TRE interoperability to create an ecosystem for data linkage. The EOSC-ENTRUST Blueprint is laying the foundation for this interoperable network.
  3. Build on international standards and best practices, such as the Five Safes research principles and the SATRE standard architecture for TREs.
  4. Nurture TRE communities by supporting and encouraging collaborations among service providers, data custodians, researchers and the public.
  5. Build and maintain effective public engagement to establish public trust.
