EOSC-ENTRUST publishes first-year technical reports

EOSC-ENTRUST has published three reports describing technical work during the project’s first year. The reports describe progress in AAAI (Authentication, Authorization and Auditing Infrastructure), technical Trusted Research Environment (TRE) Blueprint validation by use cases and the establishment of a TRE Provider Forum. The project, a collaboration between 15 European countries, is creating a common European reference architecture, the EOSC-ENTRUST Blueprint, to enable secure connectivity and interoperability between TREs across Europe.

The AAAI TRE blueprint report outlines a framework for AAAI within TREs to ensure secure, interoperable and accountable access to sensitive research data across Europe. The EOSC-ENTRUST AAAI architecture builds on Authentication and Authorisation for Research and Collaboration (AARC) with additional components to support the needs of the EOSC-ENTRUST federation and enhance security, compliance and operational efficiency. The framework will be reviewed and updated throughout the remaining two years of the project.

EOSC-ENTRUST has four drivers (use cases) that define the requirements for federated, multinational use of TREs in the areas of genomics, clinical trials, social science and public-private partnerships. The driver validation report evaluates the first version of the EOSC-ENTRUST Blueprint against the requirements set by the four drivers. The report identifies the need for enhanced identity assurance mechanisms, interoperability standards and secure software service frameworks. It also addresses the importance of alignment with European Health Data Space (EHDS) regulations.

The EOSC-ENTRUST TRE Provider Forum brings together 15 TRE provider organisations working towards the convergence of TRE technology. The provider adoption and evaluation report outlines progress in integrating TREs within the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The report highlights key achievements, including the establishment of the TRE Provider Forum, the development of a TRE inventory and a gap analysis of baseline capabilities.

During the next two years of EOSC-ENTRUST, the technical framework of the TRE Blueprint will continue to be refined, informed by the requirements of the four use cases and in partnership with the TRE Provider Forum.
